oh man i hope it does!!
and yes i totally get you - i never managed to write anything pre-pandemic and after that i started hanging out in discords way more and lo and behold! fics! fics everywhere! LOL
but yeah, i'd definitely be interested if you manage to get anything going on here - even if you're not in the same fandom, just casually talking to someone fandom-related can be so much fun!

Different purposes for different spaces makes absolute sense! Hope you find a nice comfy spot for yourself here, and that people share plenty of tips for enjoying one's times on DW so that I can learn from everyone too, haha :)

Hi! I am a lurker/serial commenter-in-the-tags on Tumblr (I'm nocompromise-noregrets there) and greatly appreciate your ao3cotd content!

I'm another refugee from LJ who's never quite managed to find a community via Tumblr (Discord is a mystery to me) - your post the other day about community really struck a chord with me. I came back to being properly active in fandom after a ten year break last year, although I'd been sort-of active on Tumblr all that time, and found I no longer knew how to get to know people because things had changed so much.

That said...if anyone out there is in the LotR/Hobbit fandom and knows of good comms on here or Discord servers, do feel free to let me know. :D I had a bit of a look for comms but didn't really find much, and I have absolutely no idea how to go about finding servers on Discord! XD

:D Glad to see others tryings to get back into DW!
Any chance anyone here are fellow Girl Genius or LEGO Monkie Kid fans? I'm also into My Hero Acadamia, but I am only interested in fanning All Might there.

That's the thing...the finding! I feel very old and out of touch, and fandom in general has definitely changed while I was 'away' (I wasn't away away, I just wasn't really in a fandom, just casually engaging, mostly with the MCU, via Tumblr) so now I'm floundering a bit. There doesn't seem to be much activity on here - a couple of fic challenge comms are active when the challenges are active, but other than that it's all very quiet. And Discord is a total mystery to me. XD I feel very old and out of touch XDDDD

On the other hand, I've got some serial commenters on AO3, so although I don't 'know' most of them outside AO3, it does feel a little bit like 'home'/LJ. :D In any case, it's done my general happiness levels the world of good being back in a fandom again. <3333

Saw your post on tumblr and popped on over! I never really did fandom on LJ tbh, but I still used it a lot for personal journalling and made friends that way and still miss the threaded comments and communities and all that. I've mostly been using my DW for dear creator letters for exchanges because I wasn't sure what else to use it for XD (or how to find people here—I know my main fandom is not at all active here, it's all tumblr, discord, or twitter)

I've mostly been into Stranger Things for the past 3 1/2 years (only writing Harringrove, which attracted a lot of hate, so I get anxious talking about it outside of my Tumblr bubble XD) and, like many others, have gone back to Destiel since what happened last November! Haha But I'm reallllllly struggling to find people to talk to in SPN/Destiel! Tumblr is so hit or miss and I deleted my discord account after finding it way too hard to make conversation in that environment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

TBH, I enjoy fandom spaces that aren't necessarily fandom specific as well as specific places! But I seem to have forgotten how to start conversations...

Ahhh. I never actually got into IRC, and never quite got my head round chat rooms, so I think that's probably a lot of the problem - I just can't quite figure it out. And...good point about comms on here. Maybe I should make one! :D

Yeah - at first Tumblr did seem a lot more community-based, but these days mostly people just seem to reblog each other's pretty art and fic and don't really *talk* (probably because they're all talking on Discord XD ). I've been on there ten years and can count the friends I've made there (as opposed to friends I've made elsewhere who I also have on Tumblr) on the fingers of one hand. I don't know if that's a me problem or a problem with how the site/fandom functions, but I find it's easy to interact on a fairly superficial level - but harder to make friends.

There's a thesis in there somewhere, but it won't be me writing it! (I'm percolating an essay about fandom iconography, but that's going to have to wait until I've cleared off most of my fic WIPs, of which there are many, what even is my life :D )

Anyway. It's all fascinating stuff - and it's lovely to talk to you! :D

None of my fandoms are here at all D: That's what I get for being a fan of small indie games that are mostly dead. Or that everyone knows about but no one seems to talk about.

Fortunately, it seems like there's a LOT of writing, prompts, and stuff. Used to follow a ton of those blogs on Tumblr until they kinda started winking out one by one.

Also, what seems to be a much more pro-AO3 stance in general is...really, REALLY welcome at this point.

You're probably right on that. Plus it seems like text media actually has value?

Oh, cool! :D

Yeah, I hadn't really noticed how quiet it was until then, either. I thought it was just ST being in between seasons, but obviously it was more than just my corner that was quiet! XD tbh it was a bit overwhelming trying to keep up with it haha

That's cool! I'm still figuring out what else to do here but I'm happy to chit chat, too :D (I also like using DW to keep up with various challenges, which I wouldn't know about otherwise)

My dream is to one day have prompts/sign-ups be searchable on the Archive, but I think if you told folks to format their prompts like Fandom, relationship, prompt and do one per line, you could probably make the prompts into a CSV and import them to Google Sheets to make a nice, searchable list. It would be annoying to do, but probably not any worse than compiling them from a DW comment section (which I never volunteered to do because it sounds excruciating 😆).

Of course, all of this would mean you can't use AO3's Claim/Fill functions in any meaningful way, but that wasn't part of the original experience, so it's not a huge loss, imo.

Now that I've said all this, I've realized it's not the prompting phase that's my issue, but the filling stage. I think what I'd miss with a porn battle on AO3 is the experience of posting a fill in a comment (so much easier than posting a work! so much less pressure to create something refined!) and of scrolling through pages of fills (it's just too easy to skip to what you want on AO3 and miss stuff you wouldn't ordinarily consider) and replies to the fills (which explains the odd urge I had to say that doing it on AO3 felt like it lacked the same sense of community -- seeing the replies threads = feeling of community that isn't equaled by seeing Comments: # in an AO3 work blurb).

So now I'm glad to have a better understanding of what really made the Dreamwidth porn battle experience so special to me, but sad I don't think it can be reproduced!

Fandom events and communities

[personal profile] chacusha 2021-06-18 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Since I saw people wondering what fandoms are active on DW and where you can get things like kink memes and such. I'd like to point people in the direction of these resources:

[community profile] fandomcalendar (people post single-fandom and multi-fandom events here, which includes the activities of some long-running fic and other fanwork communities; and if you're running an event (on DW or elsewhere), this is great place to promote it!)
[community profile] fanwork_events_calendar (collection of events posted in the above comm and elsewhere, in the form of a calendar)
[community profile] fandom_on_dw (a place to promote fannish communities including ones that don't run events)

Unfortunately, most fandoms here are quite small, but there's enough people to support largely panfandom/multifandom events with a smattering of single-fandom events, which can take some getting used to. Hope this helps!

*waves hi*

I'm only on here because this is where several of my fandoms' kink memes are hosted, so I don't understand how to use the rest of the site's features beyond what's necessary for that. D:

Hello! GG fan here, well less of a fan and more like a semi-regular reader, but the GG community is one of the rare things I miss from LJ!

Hi! Saw your post on tumblr and decided to peek in here too. I kinda miss the old LJ communities, but I haven't had enough time to try and build one here, but since the internet is getting splintered again, figured the non-commercial side of it might actually be worth the while again.
