this is very nice but also logging in made me see my old icon 😂 shows how often i'm on here really would love for that to change but i don't think my current 'main' fandom would follow me over from tumblr and everything else is more 'niche fandom within a fandom' that's perfectly at home on tumblr and discord... might have to cast a wide net looking for things 😂
Ha, delighted to see you on DW too!! I've been trying to use my account, and I do like being here - it feels more peaceful, things moves slower, it's okay to take your time...
But it's hard to meet people :') There aren't as many communities with "my people" as there used to be, and my current focus is an anime fandom which, I don't think they ever really thrived on LJ and DW?
Either way, welcome here and looking forward to follow what you have to share :)
Hi! I am a lurker/serial commenter-in-the-tags on Tumblr (I'm nocompromise-noregrets there) and greatly appreciate your ao3cotd content!
I'm another refugee from LJ who's never quite managed to find a community via Tumblr (Discord is a mystery to me) - your post the other day about community really struck a chord with me. I came back to being properly active in fandom after a ten year break last year, although I'd been sort-of active on Tumblr all that time, and found I no longer knew how to get to know people because things had changed so much.
That said...if anyone out there is in the LotR/Hobbit fandom and knows of good comms on here or Discord servers, do feel free to let me know. :D I had a bit of a look for comms but didn't really find much, and I have absolutely no idea how to go about finding servers on Discord! XD
:D Glad to see others tryings to get back into DW! Any chance anyone here are fellow Girl Genius or LEGO Monkie Kid fans? I'm also into My Hero Acadamia, but I am only interested in fanning All Might there.
Saw your post on tumblr and popped on over! I never really did fandom on LJ tbh, but I still used it a lot for personal journalling and made friends that way and still miss the threaded comments and communities and all that. I've mostly been using my DW for dear creator letters for exchanges because I wasn't sure what else to use it for XD (or how to find people here—I know my main fandom is not at all active here, it's all tumblr, discord, or twitter)
I've mostly been into Stranger Things for the past 3 1/2 years (only writing Harringrove, which attracted a lot of hate, so I get anxious talking about it outside of my Tumblr bubble XD) and, like many others, have gone back to Destiel since what happened last November! Haha But I'm reallllllly struggling to find people to talk to in SPN/Destiel! Tumblr is so hit or miss and I deleted my discord account after finding it way too hard to make conversation in that environment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TBH, I enjoy fandom spaces that aren't necessarily fandom specific as well as specific places! But I seem to have forgotten how to start conversations...
None of my fandoms are here at all D: That's what I get for being a fan of small indie games that are mostly dead. Or that everyone knows about but no one seems to talk about.
Fortunately, it seems like there's a LOT of writing, prompts, and stuff. Used to follow a ton of those blogs on Tumblr until they kinda started winking out one by one.
Also, what seems to be a much more pro-AO3 stance in general is...really, REALLY welcome at this point.
Since I saw people wondering what fandoms are active on DW and where you can get things like kink memes and such. I'd like to point people in the direction of these resources:
fandomcalendar (people post single-fandom and multi-fandom events here, which includes the activities of some long-running fic and other fanwork communities; and if you're running an event (on DW or elsewhere), this is great place to promote it!) fanwork_events_calendar (collection of events posted in the above comm and elsewhere, in the form of a calendar) fandom_on_dw (a place to promote fannish communities including ones that don't run events)
Unfortunately, most fandoms here are quite small, but there's enough people to support largely panfandom/multifandom events with a smattering of single-fandom events, which can take some getting used to. Hope this helps!
I'm only on here because this is where several of my fandoms' kink memes are hosted, so I don't understand how to use the rest of the site's features beyond what's necessary for that. D:
Hi! Saw your post on tumblr and decided to peek in here too. I kinda miss the old LJ communities, but I haven't had enough time to try and build one here, but since the internet is getting splintered again, figured the non-commercial side of it might actually be worth the while again.
Hello!!! This is feckyeswriting over on Tumblr. Been a big fan of all that you've done with starting dialogue and (controlled, non-hostile) discussion in fandom :3 Glad to see you have joined us here on DW!
Hello! I saw your post on Tumblr, as well as the Dreamwidth Primer you reblogged, and it inspired me to come out of my lurk cave. I never got into Livejournal, mainly because I didn't know about it until like, the late 2010s. But Dreamwidth seems like a pretty chill, low pressure kind of site. I'm too intimidated by sites like Twitter and Tumblr haha. The focus on conversation that DW seems to prioritize also makes it appealing. I often don't give my words much credit, but I do surprise myself quite a bit with how much I can talk when I allow myself to.
There's a lot of cool fandom events on DW, but I always seem to find them after they've already started or just after they're over :( I've had the passing thought of starting a fandom event for an obscure fandom, if only just to see what would happen. Liveblogging also seems to be fairly popular on DW, and that's something that's always interested me. I amuse myself a lot with the things I say and think while consuming media, and it'd be nice to amuse others with that as well, or at least have a place to keep them for future reference.
Anyway, I also want to quickly say thank you for all that you do for fandom. Your blog has helped me through a lot of tough times with writing, and honestly, with life in general. High hopes to all!
yes, why not! I ported over my LJ entries a while back when I stopped using it, and have made the occasional post over here since then when I needed it to be for my eyes only. But I'm definitely a victim of the LJ demise, never managed to get into a community spirit on other sites (too fast paced!), and didn't invest a whole lot into DW either... my only mutuals here are people I knew on LJ. None of them are actually active on DW.
What do you think of Pillowfort, which I'd describe as trying to be a blend of LJ and Tumblr?
Heya! I happened to click over to your journal because you were one of the only other people someone who just friended me had friended (...if that sentence makes any sense). I see you're just getting started on here, so, welcome! I'm one of the HP people themightyflynn mentioned, though I'm also into some other fandoms. There are quite a few Star Trek and MCU people around here, I know. There's also a lot of people who may or may not be in fandom (or used to be) and post general interest stuff like photography, art, book reviews, funny things that happened in their lives, and so on. It can be a bit of a process to find people because comms aren't really a thing as much as they were on LJ. Generally I've met people on here by noticing them commenting on other people's posts and checking out their journals, or through fandom events.
But one thing you might be interested in, which I don't think has been mentioned so far, is sunshine_challenge, which is an annual event coming up in July. It's basically a big community-building thing where there are prompts and everyone's encouraged to go look at everybody else's posts in response to them. I've met tons of people through that over the last couple of years. (snowflake_challenge is similar and runs in January.)
Anyway, I've added you, if that's okay. Hope to see you around. :)
Hey! Also followed over from Tumblr (via ao3cotd). I dusted off my DW at the beginning of this year, and it has absolutely been a huge breath of fresh air to me as well. I was on LJ a decade ago, and I've missed the long-form posting ability, as well as not feeling like *everything* you say is being flung to the wilds. (Plus no ads. It's amazing what a difference that makes.)
There is definitely a decent fandom presence here still, depending on what fandoms. (Huge fandoms or slightly older ones like SG1 seem to have more.) I'd love for there to be more, though!
i also followed from tumblr (ultraviollettt), i havent had an account before but i had a hyperfixation on social media sites (specifically nonprofit ones) so im super glad you posted about it! I want more interaction, just like you said on tumblr, but i need to work on being anxious about every post i make lol. howd you hear about dreamwidth in the first place?
Hi! I follow ao3cotd on tumblr, and I'm here a few days late with no Starbucks. I've had a DW account for a really long time, but I'm not super great at updating here. The last time I was really active with it was when everyone thought tumblr was ending a few years ago and there was a push for rebuilding some community here. I'm glad to have a reason to try again! Hope you are having a good start to your week :)
Hi! I'm also Pegasus143 over on tumblr; you've probably seen me respond to ao3cotd posts a few times. I first made a dreamwidth account after getting into fic exchanges through yuletide, since it seemed like the easiest way of keeping track of everything. That's about the extent of my activities on here, since none of my special interest fandoms really have an active community. I'd rather focus my community-building efforts on discord due to being pretty familiar with it, while also having a sense of control over it that I simply don't have on tumblr. Honestly, there are some days where I feel like I'm just unfollowing tons of people who I don't even remember why I started following them in the first place, rather than talking to people I already follow or following new people who seem interesting.
hello just dropping a comment here to say i've subscribed to you because i saw a tumblr link to your discussion of community in online spaces and i thought to myself 'well this is excellent, this is exactly the kind of conversation i would like to participate in or lurk around' so hi
