Link to playlist here.
Fic the playlist is for is here.
Romance ga ariamaru:
title drop! The plaintive way Kawatani sings “ariaMAru” just really encapsulated the vibe I was going for with this. And I mean the fic is kind of about going from years of sporadic occasional contact to suddenly spending an Excess of time with each other, so. I like it. I headcanon Kuroo as a gesukiwa liker because they were at their peak of popularity/relevance at around the same time as when he was in college.

Aoi, Koi, Daidaiiro no hi: Everyone I know with the most sophisticated music taste really likes Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. I like them fine, but I headcanon krtsk as having cooler music taste than me, and I do think it makes good train ride music.

Unbelievers: I listened to this a lot when writing my first krtsk fic so putting this on the playlist brings me back to that frame of mind

The stars will stay here: Kino is easily the greatest Russian rock band of all time, but this song’s a bit of a deeper cut for them. I like it! I think it’s fun. The chorus I think is the most relevant (rough TL by me): “I got caught in a net and I can’t get out (doodoodoodooo) / your gaze/ hits me like an electric current/ and the stars, having fallen, will all remain here/forever remain here.”

Yoake no machi de sayonara wo: I like it and having headcanoned kuroo as a gesukiwa fan thought it appropriate to add to the list

Put your camera down (English): I am content with taking in this moment caught in time.

Portugal: another fic’s author notes connected this song to Kagehina which made me scream but also Talking is Hard was my writing soundtrack for most of 2018, and is thus heavily mentally associated with my peak postcanon hq fic production period. Magic spell for making me write.

Watashi igai watashi ja nai no: coke commercial song :sob: but also a fave, and also I think describes Tsukki pretty well.

Do I Wanna Know: AM was my writing soundtrack for my first krtsk fic ever (I associate the album with work because my high school art class always played it start to finish during Work Time lol), for a while the playlist had R U Mine but then I decided this fit better.

Junkie: not thematically relevant I just liked the sound and wanted a Frederic song that wasn’t oddloop lol because they’re a J-indie Band that I think kuroo might like. I guess a little thematically relevant: the fed-up part.

Take me out: yaoi song

Eve Stepper: underrated hitorie banger. I love the melody, the chorus, wowaka’s voice (rip), it fills me with an intense unnamable forward-propelling energy and thus belongs on a writing playlist for me.

Starship Syncopation: I like to think kuroo listens to things like this when home alone.

The Adults are Talking: they’ll get it right some time.

Shunrai: this was not a j-drama ending theme (though yonezu has done several) but if it was I would’ve watched that drama. I love kenshi yonezu so much. This song is on the playlist because I like it and because of the chorus bit that translates to “to give shape to it, to give voice to it, would be so incredibly fraught…”

Hyperventilation: most interesting radwimps song. I think this is what the inside of tsukki’s head sounds like when he’s stressed out lol.

Senkou Shoujo (Put your camera down but Japanese): The English version isn’t a one-to-one translation, so it has a slightly different vibe in each language, which is why I wanted to include both versions. I like both versions!

Ai Ren Cuo Guo: Not a lyrics-based addition for once, I just like the vibes and like imagining krtsk listening to this on the train. I think it sounds nice :) Placement on the list determined by where it sounded best in the musical flow, not where it appears in the story

Sympathy: “now we’ve got that sympathy, what I’m to you, you are to me, let’s go”

Delusionalism: I like how it sounds after Sympathy.

Melancholy Kitchen: I like how it sounds at this point in the playlist, and it’s an underrated older Yonezu where he sounds a little younger and rougher than in his more recent stuff. The song is about a relationship falling apart due to a communication breakdown and one person cooking things badly, so not that thematically relevant, but I like the fun melody and the way it feels intimate and ultimately optimistic.

Hachimitsu: Spitz was most popular in the 90s so I thought it’d make sense as a band for Kuroo’s dad to be into, and then I listened through this album as a test to see if it made sense for the context in which I mentioned it and decided that yes it is in fact totally perfect.

Not Appearing In This Playlist: Lamp Genso, despite being mentioned in the fic. I do think Tsukki would like them/that album, I just didn’t want to listen to it while writing because it’s too slow and downbeat to keep me typing lol.

Chapter 3 was sooooo much easier to edit, breezy and took just a bit over 5h. A 3.5k words chapter is sooo much easier to wrangle than a beast that grew to nearly 10k XD Having said that, re-reading beta feedback, a couple of people did say that C3-C5 specifically felt not exactly "slow" but like it was only setup for the rest... This feels like pacing/stakes stuff which I'm too close to the text to easily see right now. I'm hoping that the big restructuring work I did at the start of this round (also based on beta feedback, thanks again!) will help in that the larger story's stakes get raised in a more proper crescendo now, rather than go "grumbles, grumbles, grumbles, SUDDEN FIRE EXPLOSION KABOOM" as they did in the previous draft. Also I'm fleshing out more secondary characters and connecting in small ways various background happenings, and I'm hoping that will also help hold up the reader's interest better. Hoping, hoping.

I'm having a good time and enjoying the process, which is rare enough for editing that it's worth saying! Things are actually quite strange right now. My "lighthearted" project when I need a break is fic for a new-to-me fandom, and so I don't know the characters very well yet. I had a full outline written up in a sort of a draft 0 way, with sentence fragments, bits of dialogue, and so on. When I work on it, I'm making all of this into proper prose but it's very plot-focused and lacking a bit of heart at the moment (I'll fix that in edits later!). So I'm not getting the same catharsis I usually get out of writing.

Meanwhile, a lot of the editing I'm doing right now is possible because I've refined the motivations both of the MC and of so many characters around her. So while I'm only adding a couple of paragraphs here and there, or a sentence to hint at more, there's a lot more heart going into it and I feel like I'm getting the kind of, hm, mental wellbeing boost? deep inner satisfaction? that I usually get from writing.

Additionally, I feel like I'm getting to know the MC a lot better, and the fondness I have for her only grows and grows. It's a nice place to be. I've wondered a few times if I should have gotten feedback earlier, but because of the way this particular story was written, I don't think it would have worked well. The first draft required so many changes including a personality transplant for the other main character so let's not even consider it. After the first round of edits (structural), while I had the plot and main relationship nailed down, the world was utterly empty. I had described no setting. The worldbuilding was barebone beyond anything that directly moved the story. Not a very interesting tale to read, and that would have easily confused what were the other necessary fixes that came up during the actual beta-reading, of the kind I did need an external perspective on.

I'm really, really enjoying what this round of editing is changing in the story. I really hope that when I'm done and have taken a step back, it all looks like well done embroidery on a tapestry, and not like haphazard patchwork on a story corpse 😅 Gently holding this feeling into my palms until I hit the next editing road bump... XD

Less exciting by a long shot than yesterday's Huntington treatment news, but I was feeling extremely icky today and then Genghis Khan by Miike Snow came on in the café where I stopped for lunch, and it made me chair dance.

I didn't link the official video. I linked a shot-for-shot remake from Phineas and Ferb, a tv show about which I know approximately nothing not found in the vid. And I ship it anyway.

I want book recs if anyone has them. I'm about to start the last John Dies at the End audiobook, and I am finding I think maybe listening to audiobooks as much or more than disconnected reddit stories or true crime docs/YouTube videos might be good for my mental health.

As mentioned, I most recently have been on a Jason Pargin kick. I don't know why. I just respect him and think he's a cool guy. Honestly his prose isn't that beautiful but it's easy as hell to follow.

In the past, I was also really into Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I'm usually genuinely interested in whatever I'm reading or teaching as an English teacher.

I'm not looking for high brow or hard to track stuff right now.

I would be most interested in:

funny novels with a dark or ironic twist

horror that isn't primarily about gore

sci-fi that is funny or clever

I've not been super into reading or listening to fantasy as I've tried it and my long term project there is Wheel of Time but I went off it a bit when the TV show got cancelled after season 3. Just dread or whatever. But I would be interested in like a baby's first romantasy

I prefer character driven / shipping possible novels but only feel mildly so about the JDATE novels so I'm flexible. I'm also looking for stuff that'll make me wanna write

Thank you if you have suggestions 🙏

A nice dietary supplement over the summer for the toad and frog is caterpillars from my mom's garden. Both Berry Mad and Guava Splash seem very excited for caterpillars. Berry Mad is excited about anything that moves and might fit in her face, but Guava Splash is significantly more excited for caterpillars than the usual fruit flies.

Well, I did it. For the first time ever, I nominated for Yuletide.

Fandoms:

One Battle After Another, the upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson movie loosely based on Pynchon's Vineland.
The Great Gatsby (book not movie), because I want the backstory of Gatsby and his mentor.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (anime), which I'm halfway through and enjoying a great deal so why not.
Monstress, because I still really enjoy this comic and this fandom has so little fic, especially stories that aren't Maika/Tuya focused.

Perhaps I'll get inspired to nominate a fifth one?

If anyone's got some open slots and wants to nominate a couple of characters for me for One Battle After Another, I'd appreciate it. (I've also made this request at the coordination post at [community profile] yuletide.)

Moth and moons. Wanted something celestial, because we went out to see stars one night.

This was a pretty good week. We went to a lantern festival (have not gotten around to pictures yet) that was a definite high point. While the week should have been pretty good, it felt a little meh. That may have largely been just state of the world stuff getting to me. I did have some frustration around how difficult I found it to get things done - I had an extra day off, yet just seemed to fall farther behind on things. I did force through and get some things done, but my reading and writing took a hit.

Goals for the week:

  • Friday was Taylor's birthday! <3
  • I did catch up on DW posts
  • I did catch up on DW comments
  • I started to catch up on DW posting
  • I cleaned up the katydid cages
  • I read more of Tidal Creatures
  • I did not work on my reading page
  • I did not work on my WIP
  • We did get a bit of outdoor time
  • I got a very little bit of cleaning in the living room done
  • I did reply to emails
  • I made necessary (annoying, didn't-resolve-it) phone calls
  • I bought us tickets to the lantern festival
  • We went to the lantern festival!
  • I cleaned up the small frog habitat
  • I put my laundry away

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 4/7 - I took Sunday off
  • Household Maintenance - 4/7
  • Physical Activity - 2/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/7
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 3/7
  • Personal Writing - 4/7
  • Other Creative Things - 3/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - Mostly I was reading Tidal Creatures, though I also read a short story called "Swelter", kept up with Dracula Daily, and Alex and I read more Duma Key
  • Attention to Media - 6/7 - Sunday I caught up on some Re: Dracula; Monday we watched a paranormal video; Tuesday we went to see The Long Walk, which I thought was quite good, and had some storm chase in the background; Wednesday we watched a very lousy horror movie called American Horror House, and I listened to a long ep of Re: Dracula; Friday we watched Great British Bake Off and the first three eps of Adolescence; Saturday watched a paranormal video and then news in the background, and I listened to more Re: Dracula.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 4/7

Here is the problem with venturing into the realm of fanmade Danganronpas (or Fanganronpas, as the community inevitably calls them): where do you stop?

What I'm saying is that, having got into Danganronpa: Despair Time, I've now investigated Project: Eden's Garden.

Eden's Garden is a playable Danganronpa fangame that can be downloaded free on itch.io, but, as my laptop is very much not a gaming laptop and might struggle to play it, I've watched the development team's official no-commentary playthrough instead. The prologue and first chapter have currently been released.

The first thing that strikes me is the absolutely insane level of polish and production values; this game is better-looking than an actual Danganronpa game. I think it's the most impressive fan project I've ever seen, and I've seen some impressive fan projects in my time!

I do think I love Despair Time more. Despair Time is a lot messier, but its characters grabbed me more powerfully, and I think it does a better job of capturing Danganronpa's comedic tone. I do really enjoy Eden's Garden, though; I found the case in the first chapter absolutely gripping, and I'm looking forward to more!

I wouldn't say I love Damon (yet?), but I like him pretty solidly. Arrogance is an unusual and interesting quality in a Danganronpa protagonist. I enjoy that he takes himself very seriously and gets embarrassed if anything threatens his pride, and I really like every glimpse we get of him feeling some sort of connection to the others in spite of his 'I can't rely on anyone else' attitude.

I'm also glad Damon is extremely bisexual, in true Danganronpa protagonist fashion. I love that he sees his room has a male pinup calendar and a) assumes it's a jab at him, b) finds it unwelcomely sexy and c) tries to conceal its existence from the others because he thinks they'll draw conclusions about him.

Some other character who've caught my attention so far:

Wolfgang fascinates me; it's always fun when a character thinks they're the protagonist. He gives me 'Phoenix Wright gone terribly wrong' vibes. A Phoenix who became disillusioned after the de Killer case and turned to prosecution, maybe. He spoke so passionately in the mock trial; there's something very compelling about him!

Desmond seems laid-back and sensible in a way that I appreciate in a Danganronpa cast; you need a few normal people to balance out the weirdos (although the weirdos are also essential). Does he have something going on with Eloise, or am I imagining things?

Diana is so sweet! I really appreciated her willingness to extend Damon and Eva some kindness when they were ostracised by the rest of the group. Ingrid also seems like a sweetheart.

I enjoy Cassidy. A lot of the things she says are very entertaining, and her voice actor seems to be having a great time.

Grace's abrasiveness is fun. I love that her soundbite when making a counterargument in a trial is 'SHUT THE FUCK UP.' I'm pretty sure she and Wolfgang are banging non-stop when they aren't onscreen, and, you know what, good for them.

I find myself weirdly fond of Kai, who is obnoxious and self-interested but also slowly seems to be coming to trust Damon.

Here are some further thoughts, with spoilers up to the end of chapter one! NB: there's some brief and non-explicit speculation on a dubcon fic concept here.

Spoilery notes on Project: Eden's Garden. )

While I'm talking about Danganronpa and its ilk: here I am, on my periodic descent back into Danganronpa hell, and Danganronpa 2x2 gets announced? An AU version of Danganronpa 2? With different victims and murderers???

I can't believe this is happening. I am not at all prepared for Nagito Komaeda to happen to Tumblr all over again. This is an absolutely ludicrous concept for a game. I'm so pleased.

Eaglecon is Cal State LA's student-focused science fiction convention.

It's very small - mid-week, two days only, 8 programming items the first day and 6 the second. Mostly one-hour events with 15 minute breaks between. Programming is over for the day by 4:30; there is no late-afternoon/evening schedule. Daytime student event.

I'll post later about the convention itself. General LA-related thoughts:

1) It mostly feels like home (SF Bay Area) except there is only one garbage can in each room - not three (trash, recycling, compost).

2) I am the only person I can see wearing mask.

3) Temperature's nice. I brought only a light denim jacket and it's been fine, a little warm at mid-day but okay even then, and it keeps the sun off my arms.

4) My prep would've been different if I'd known the room had a microwave and fridge. (I could've called to check; was not up for it.) Today on the way back to the hotel, I stopped into a Chinese supermarket and picked up some kind of beef-veggie rice bowl & frozen steamed buns with sesame filling, both of which can be heated up in the microwave.

5) Lots of Chinese stores nearby, with signs in both Chinese and English. I read zero Chinese but I can recognize the word "no" (の) in Japanese, and I didn't see it. It's common enough that I'd expect it of there are a lot of signs, so I am assuming the language I'm seeing is Chinese.

6) I may stop in to the Chinese supermarket on the way out tomorrow and grab short-grain rice. It's hard to find short-grain rice in American supermarkets. I will have to see how packing goes and if I can leave space for a 2-lb or 5-lb bag of rice.
