I'm at Eaglecon in LA

Eaglecon is Cal State LA's student-focused science fiction convention.

It's very small - mid-week, two days only, 8 programming items the first day and 6 the second. Mostly one-hour events with 15 minute breaks between. Programming is over for the day by 4:30; there is no late-afternoon/evening schedule. Daytime student event.

I'll post later about the convention itself. General LA-related thoughts:

1) It mostly feels like home (SF Bay Area) except there is only one garbage can in each room - not three (trash, recycling, compost).

2) I am the only person I can see wearing mask.

3) Temperature's nice. I brought only a light denim jacket and it's been fine, a little warm at mid-day but okay even then, and it keeps the sun off my arms.

4) My prep would've been different if I'd known the room had a microwave and fridge. (I could've called to check; was not up for it.) Today on the way back to the hotel, I stopped into a Chinese supermarket and picked up some kind of beef-veggie rice bowl & frozen steamed buns with sesame filling, both of which can be heated up in the microwave.

5) Lots of Chinese stores nearby, with signs in both Chinese and English. I read zero Chinese but I can recognize the word "no" (の) in Japanese, and I didn't see it. It's common enough that I'd expect it of there are a lot of signs, so I am assuming the language I'm seeing is Chinese.

6) I may stop in to the Chinese supermarket on the way out tomorrow and grab short-grain rice. It's hard to find short-grain rice in American supermarkets. I will have to see how packing goes and if I can leave space for a 2-lb or 5-lb bag of rice.

Waiting for you.

The first day of fall. Rosh Hashanah beginning a new year. And giving blood, too. It took me just over six minutes, which isn't bad except for how I know I can do better than that. I'll keep hydrating and hitting the treadmill.

I'm also going to leave the bandage on until bedtime, as usual. It's yellow, so I feel like I should pick a dress for tonight's dinner that'll really make it pop.

[Happy Hobbit Day! This is a revision of a review I first posted to my LJ on October 10th, 2011. It has been edited for clarity and additional information.]

Though apparently a huge success in Europe, this game is more obscure in the US, where it was released as Hobbit Software Adventure. (In the 1980s the word "software" was exciting enough to put in a name. Some early games also advertised on the box that they were "100% machine language!")

The manual calls it "one of the most sophisticated adventures ever designed for microcomputers," so let's don our evening attire, pour a glass of wine, and boot it up.

SOFTWARE! Excited yet? )

You can play the DOS port of The Hobbit/Hobbit Software Adventure in your browser, for an unforgettable evening of text-based sophistication. 🍷

I did finish revising Chapter 2 over the weekend, as I hoped! The story now stands at 50.7k words. Is it okay if I think of it as a novel rather than a novella now? XD In my heart I will, but because it's fantasy and fantasy books usually land closer to 150k words, I suppose it still counts as novella-sized for the genre. Ah well!!

The next couple of chapters will have quite a few changes too, but even with that it should be easier going from now on. It should be. It will be. Yes. Totally!!

I started listening to Jason K. Pargin's TikToks on some other platforms since I myself never made a TikTok account or downloaded the app. I started to vibe with his perspective. He's a generation older than me, but he speaks to a lot of the weird alienation that has accelerated in the past decade or two. He does a lot of good work to try and help men, especially young men, stop being so disaffected. I think he tries to get them to engage with art in a meaningful way, even if it's silly pop art.

As a result of my admiration for his online work, I decided to support him by reading and buying his book I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom. Then, I started to read/listen his other books when I finished that one. I'm nearly finished with This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It and still kind of like it. I don't feel fervently fannish about it, but I feel a bit fannish about it, and I wanted to fight against my making-stuff paralysis while writing words seems clogged up.
