I just looked up thanfiction on fanlore and the first paragraph alone was so much. Then I did a quick ctrl+f on the homicide mentioned and saw the way they updated their FFN profile in 2013.

I have known my fair share of dramatic people in my life, but thanfiction is an entire folio. holy fuck. the mind boggles.

I did a deep dive on him about a year or two ago, reading through the blog archives of the people who were once involved with him, as well as a couple receipt blogs and things. Truly it is just WILD.

I saw a handful of the big things happen in semi real-time via other people on LJ talking about it when they happened, (the whole thing with the con, "his son, a sparrow" etc.) and yet for a long time didn't realize so many big drama-rific events centered on *the same person.*

Fandom cults sure are a bonkers fucking ride... And that isn't even getting into the fact that a woman was murdered and he did his best to capitalize on it for YEARS.

I realized yesterday that a friend had told me about flamethrower's $500 donation milestones per chapter. But they told me 2.5 years ago and while I remembered the absolute bonkers insanity of making $14500 from a single fic (and that's just the milestones mentioned in the author's notes at the time), I had no clue who the author was who did it. The name just left my brain entirely.

Truth really is stranger than fiction (oh god, I realized the pun as I was typing but I'm keeping it anyway). If you had told me that one person had been THAT DRAMATIC in the span of a single lifetime, I never would have believed it and yet there it is on fanlore, for anyone to read.

I feel like I'd vaguely heard some mention about that in a conversation about monetizing fic, but I had no idea of the username attached and hadn't ever read any of her fic.

Right? Kumquatwriter's blog (his ex) is well worth the read for details on at least a good portion of the early days of batshittery. It's astounding to me how many outrageously dramatic events in fandom all trace back to the same damn person!

I had read some of this but not all of it and 100% didn't know he(?) started out in Voyager fandom, what the hell. That fandom is still fucked up 20+ years later. Makes me wonder if he had a nose for weirdness or was just really effective at bringing it with him.

But yeah. Between this guy in Cassie Clare and MsScribe and now apparently flamethrower, I'm kind of wondering what it is about Harry Potter that all of these people ended up in there eventually. Probably just the sheer size of it at the time, right?

Yeah, I think HP is just big, on the mainstream side, and has been around forever, so the Really Weird Ones will tend to accumulate eventually.

I read the first paragraph and then dropped down to see whether the homicide was an actual literal murder and then I had to just backbutton out of the page entirely.

I saw that too, although I didn't read through the whole thing. I might save that for some day a year or two from now when it's all a distant memory lol. I'm glad someone did it, though. As a Fanlore peep myself, I knew *someone* should and I really didn't want it to be me lol

Fwiw, the person who wrote that new page sounds extremely fed up with the drama which makes for a really entertaining yet informative read 😂 (it looks like the page got more of a lift-up since then, but gems like these made me chuckle: "On Friday, July 29, 2022 at 20:08 UTC (1 day, 11 hours, and 27 minutes after the original post), Flamethrower made a post saying that it was now "Day Three" of the suspension (despite claiming that it was still Day One 20 hours prior).[36]

Ah, yeah, well do I remember the time I saw someone mention an HP cult in passing, asked for details (assuming it would be bad), and was linked to that Fanlore article (and it was so much worse!). The mind does indeed boggle.

when I think "HP cult" I usually think of Snapewives. Thanfiction is... indescribable. I have no words.
